How To Callus Your Mind Without Having To Cold Plunge At 4 Am

Here I break down 4 simple study-proven methods of building thick skin to vanquish your week.

Read time: 90 seconds

Picture this: It’s your average mediocre Sunday and you set tomorrow’s alarm for 7 am.

You think to yourself, “If I can just wake up at 7 tomorrow, I can do it for the rest of the week.”

It’s tomorrow. You wake up groggy, unenergized, and unfazed by the chirping bird alarm you set the night before.

You look to the right at your obnoxious clock (which is why you use your phone).

The time is 11:03 am. You’ve overslept.

Fast-forward 6 hours and:

• you’ve showered

• you’ve brushed your teeth

• you’ve posted on Twitter once.

… it’s now 5 pm and you’ve completed in 6 hours what could’ve taken you 25 minutes. You feel disappointed in yourself. You think, “something needs to change.”

This change happens now.

Thick skin, or discipline, is what makes or breaks you.

It’s what’s going to drag you to:

• build the fortress of a body you dream of

• find and build the next big thing you’re proud of

• look back at yourself in 1 yr and say “there’s no way that was me 12 months ago”

Thick skin is what is going to make you unbreakable

Because even if you think you’re above average, you need to understand and remember this:

Remember it and never forget it.

Now, let’s get to the gold… What you came for.

1) Do Not Succumb to Wantrepreneurship:

It is simply not enough to meditate.

It’s not enough to read tons of business books

It’s not enough to work only 1 hour a day on your main priority…

It’s simply not enough to watch 20 “productive” YouTube videos in a day

If you think that’s enough to win—don’t worry, I made this specifically for you.

Here’s Step 1:

I want you to realize right now that you must internalize the following sentence.

Read it, write it on a sticky note and put it on your bathroom mirror; hell, look it while you brush your teeth it you have to:

Here’s Step 2:

There’s something else you must wholeheartedly believe and codify in the ridges of your brain, so I’d do the same for this:

These beliefs take people a long time to begin to believe. Why? Because you start to believe them once you grow enough to start believing them.

Read it everyday on your morning mirror and you’ll accelerate your thick skin.

Today’s Action Step 1: Write your new beliefs on a sticky note & place them on your bathroom mirror

2) Your Orderliness Determines your Day, your Month & your Year:

Studies have proven that an orderly room signifies an orderly, calm mind and character. (I’d argue even a great attitude).

This directly backs the notion that “our outside is determined by our inside.”

Most people don’t know, though, that an orderly room & clean, simple, distraction-free space wildly increases productivity levels and the urge to work effectively.

Just like that, you’re ahead of most people.

To drive this home, let’s run through a thought experiment.

Assume all you’re trying to do is sit down at your computer & create a system for providing value via coaching.

Picture yourself working here: (How focused would you be?)

• 0 distractions • 1 laptop • 1 goal • 1 focus

Now, imagine yourself here: (How distracted would you be?)

• 99 distractions, 22 tabs open, phone faced up waiting to cause disaster

The difference is that in the second instance, there is ZERO flow state. (There’s some extra focus tips in the bonus section all the way at the bottom.)

The Lesson?

Today’s Action Step 2: Focus on one task, one project, one tab at a time

3) Read a “Morning” Book:

How you cultivate your morning directly reflects how your day will go. I’ve seen this time and time again for the past 3 years.

If you have trouble waking up in the morning, I have a solution and I guarantee you won’t hear this anywhere else.

2 months ago I was waking up at 10 am and having trouble even doing that.

Since then, I’ve read 3 morning books to let my brain develop study-driven reasons to wake up at 6 am every morning. I’ve woken up at 6 am since.

After reading the 3 books, I realized the last one would’ve done the job entirely.

The book was called The 5 AM Club. It made waking up early all I could think about. It had a narrative to get me intrigued in it, the neuroscience behind an active morning routine and what the brain it releases in the body to increase focus. Everything you could ever need to get motivated to wake up early.

If you’re a Twitter person, this book makes you insanely creative as well.

Mark my words, no amount of willpower will create the motivation for waking up early that this book will give you. I will stand by that until I die.

Today’s Action Step 3: Cultivate a morning that gives you energy &, if you can’t, then work towards it little by little by thinking more & more about it

4) Always Take the Path of Most Resistance:

You may question why you’re not sticking to habits you want.

You may ask yourself, “do I not want them enough?”

That may just be it. But there’s 2 other factors:

• You must fully commit and convict yourself to your habit or goal (meaning you’ll do ANYTHING, yes anything start)

• You must develop self-trust & personal integrity.

This last one is 🔑, and I’ll tell you why:

When you lack self-trust, you don’t take yourself seriously. In fact, you trust others more than you trust yourself.

Test your self-trust: A good way to gauge your self-trust is to see if you stick to what you tell yourself you’ll do, on average. If you can’t stick to your word, how do you expect to follow through with something hard?

That’s where tough skin comes in.

Follow through with what you tell yourself, little by little. This is what clinical psychologists like Jordan Peterson do with their clients. Why? It works.

Advanced: Once you do that, step two is to consistently push past your willpower boundaries. You have a threshold—this is where the mind quits.

You want to consistently push past this threshold as it moves the threshold back. So, essentially,

If you take nothing else away from this newsletter, remember this.

Today’s Action Step 4: Begin following through with what you tell yourself you’ll do, no matter how little the task

That’s it!

Here’s the recap to build thick skin & win your week.

  • Today’s Action Step 1: Write your new beliefs on a sticky note & place them on your bathroom mirror

  • Today’s Action Step 2: Focus on one task, one project, one tab at a time

  • Today’s Action Step 3: Cultivate a morning that gives you energy &, if you can’t, then work towards it little by little

  • Today’s Action Step 4: Begin following through with what you tell yourself you’ll do, no matter how little the task

Although that’s it for the week, I’ve added some bonuses as extra value since when I was working, I felt the need to not leave my computer.

Writing compels me and so I added my calendar, my daily morning task list & instructions, plus the method I use to get myself to work.

I think it’s worth looking over, but I hope you’ve enjoyed my first newsletter. (This took me like 4 hours… But, quality!)

‘til next week!

BONUSES:

5) Create a Google Calendar w/ your Ideal Week:

Here’s my calendar. Use this wisely.

Note: I’m only a professional because I’m a full-time student.

My google calendar setup. Note intermittent fasting & no device periods.

6) Set your “Daily 5” Every Morning:

Here’s my morning accountability. I’ve tried accountability groups, but nobody should want it as bad as you.

It didn’t work because other people didn’t post. I out-disciplined them.

The goal here is to write 5 commitments for the day that would make the day an astounding success.

I haven’t missed a single day and that’s how you know it works.

Here’s the Step-by-Step (60 seconds):

Step 1: Open a note

Step 2: Hit the “to-do” button at the top

Step 3: Write 5 commitments for the day to make it a killer day

Step 4: Write 1 reward for completing all of them (where I put the wand)

It sets your day up with a plan & takes 60 seconds.

7) Set a Timer and jab jab jab:

Okay, this one is a killer.

This is my screen when I’m working:

Notice anything?

If you spotted it, here’s the trick:

This is the key. Urgency

Simple.

  Sit down.

  Open the “Clock” app

Set a timer for 1 hour.

  Get to work.

Urgency works like magic.

See ya next week!

P.S., the only way this grows is through word-of-mouth,

So if you know of 1 or 2 people who need to hear this,

Send it their way.

Never know, it might just change their life like it will yours.
