How truly understanding respect changed the way I see the world...
Here I break down respect in a way you've never before seen...
Read time: 90 seconds
Think of the last time you had respect for someone.
What did they do to earn it?
Did they do something objectively hard?
Something challenging for them?
Were they consistent at something?
Did they do something kind even when nobody was watching?
What did they do to gain your respect?
The reality is, it’s tremendously hard to pinpoint.
All of the points above are true, but I wanted to get down to the core cause.
I’ve spent countless hours adding mental notes to the idea,
and even more just thinking about it.
After continuous deliberation, I’ve got it — and it changed the way I look at human nature entirely.
First, why is respect so important?
Great question…
Respect is the foundation for all human relationships… whether its a stranger, friends, family, or a lover,
it’s the glue ensuring that problems & unhappiness fail to crystallize.
Respect is imperative in:
Understanding human behavior
Understanding leadership
Understanding influence
Understanding likability
Understanding love
Understanding yourself…
Here’s how better understanding respect can change the way you look at your behavior:
Studies have been done in marriages that have proved the following:
If you’re a man, chances are you innately seek respect.
You’ll go out of your way to obtain & maintain it — it’s just how you’re wired.
You’ll:
Give your life in war
Build an impeccable physique
Work extra hours just to make life work
Give everything you have in your business…
… just to be respected…
For men, respect drives fulfillment & feeling purposeful.
If you’re a woman, chances are you innately seek love over respect.
You’ll deliberately pursue to love & be loved, and would do anything to get it.
You’ll:
Focus on health
Give uncountable gifts
Make yourself unforgettable
Start a business & work at it endlessly…
… just to be loved…
For women, love drives fulfillment & feeling whole.
There’s no doubt in my mind you’ve seen this for yourself, but you for sure didn’t see it through this lens.
This is how respect drives us,
But what really is respect…?
… And how do we become respected?
Respect is allowing something to maintain its original function.
That means allowing something to just be.
When someone spray paints on a building, they disrespect the building…
They’ve altered its original function.
When someone respects you, they allow you to maintain your course of action.
You can tell if someone respects you by measuring if they allow you to do what you believe is right.
When someone respects you & loves you, they’re loyal.
When someone respects you & fears you, they’re obedient.
When someone doesn’t respect you is when they try to change you—
If you think it’s right for you to stay at the gym an extra hour and someone nags you or says no, they don’t respect you.
If you think its right for you to quit your 9-5 & focus all of your efforts on your business, anyone who nags you doesn’t respect you.
It’s almost as if respecting someone means believing in their way of thinking & rationale for the betterment of all parties involved.
Either way, these perspectives have already shifted the way you look at relationships & human connection—
and these will never cease to exist…
That means that for as long as humans are on this planet, you’ll have an upper-hand & a way of seeing the world that nobody else does.
See ya next week!
P.S., the only way this grows is through word-of-mouth,
So if you know of 1 or 2 people who need to hear this,
Please send it their way.
You never know, it might just change the world of someone else.
